Julie and Amy Delo Remembered

Several neighbors and invited guests held a memorial service on Memorial Day at the Julie Delo Memorial Island. The island, in the short lane to Juniper Drive, was dedicated by the Town of Clifton Park to Julie Delo in 1975 shortly after Julie’s death due to cystic fibrosis.

The invocation was given by Deacon Jerry Grigaitis of St. Edward’s Parish. Representing the local Cystic Fibrosis Foundation were Linda and Kelly Buyaskas. Supervisor of Clifton Park Phil Barrett read the town resolution that established the memorial which reads in part, “the actions of Julie Delo demonstrated the highest qualities of citizenship and belief in the proposition that government should be responsive to its citizens and that young people should work with government in seeking positive solutions in a constructive manner.”

The Delo family resided at 34 Juniper Drive. Both Julie and her sister Amy Delo were active in Girl Scouts and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation before they succumbed to the disease. Julie’s efforts in petitioning the town to preserve the small area of green space led to the installation of a bronze plaque at the site.

Jack Weiss of Beechwood Drive organized this third memorial service. He wishes to thank the current residents of 34 Juniper, Lee and Keri Horton, for their efforts in maintaining the island and small garden around the plaque. Mrs. Agnes Delo, now of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and her other children extend their gratitude to all who remember her daughters.

Open Burning in Clifton Park
In response to questions regarding open burning of wood in backyard fire pits, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) deems the Town of Clifton Park a permit district. This is based on having a community size of greater than 20,000 people. The town has a local ordinance that references the NYSDEC regulations that does NOT permit open burning within the town except under a NYSDEC issued permit which is usually land clearing for erection of a structure or a town issued permit for agriculture purposes only. The only other exception is for a fire in a container prefab fireplaces - contained area) which burns clean wood only for cooking purposes for a short period of time.
